Cutie and The Boxer, the beautiful documentary about Brooklyn artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara that have lived together in tumult, expression and flowering creativity for decades, is shared here with director Zachary Heinzerling on BYOD.

Ondi Timoner hosts Heinzerling and through clips from the movie they discuss the process of making the story, the beast of creativity, and the poetic relationship between Ushio and Noriko in this uncensored interview.

Guest Bio

Zachary Heinzerling is a director and cinematographer based in Brooklyn, NY. He was the recipient of the Directing award at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for his feature film debut, CUTIE AND THE BOXER. He has worked on several feature length films for HBO, including 3 Emmy Award winning documentaries as a field producer and camera operator. Zachary participated in the 2011 Berlinale Talent Campus. He also was selected as one of the 25 filmmakers for the Film Society of Lincoln Center and IFP’s Emerging Visions Program during the 2011 NY Film Fest. His films have received grants from Cinereach, Tribeca Film Institute, SF film society, and the Jerome Foundation. Other cinematography credits include the forthcoming feature doc TOWN HALL for PBS.

Ondi Timoner is the only filmmaker to win Grand Jury Prize at Sundance twice. Born in Miami, Florida, Timoner graduated cum laude from Yale University, with a double major in American Studies (concentration in Film and Literature) and Theater Studies.
