HOLBROOK/TWAIN: AN AMERICAN ODYSSEY documentary director Scott Teems shares his new film with clips, trailer, and explanation about Hal Holbrook’s brilliant and definitive ongoing performance as Mark Twain in MARK TWAIN TONIGHT. Holbrook, Twain, and the costs and rewards of brilliant creativity are all examined in this BYOD, hosted by Ondi Timoner.
Scott Teems is a Georgia-born writer-director whose debut narrative feature, That Evening Sun, premiered at South by Southwest, where it won the Audience Award and Special Jury Prize. It went on to win a dozen awards at film festivals across North America and was nominated for two Film Independent Spirit Awards. Scott is currently a writer for the critically-acclaimed SundanceTV drama Rectify. In addition, he has several film and television projects in development, including adaptations of Stephen King’s novella The Breathing Method for The Weinstein Company, and Andre Dubus’ acclaimed short story “A Father’s Story,” which he is planning as his next feature as writer-director. His debut feature documentary, Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey, will premiere in 2014. Scott lives in Pasadena, California, with his family.
Hal Holbrook’s Mark Twain is an icon of American theatre. Since first walking onto stage in 1954, Holbrook has performed his one-man show on Broadway, in all fifty states, in twenty countries, behind the Iron Curtain, and before five U.S. Presidents. Millions have seen the Tony and Emmy Award-winning show, and countless actors and scholars have been influenced by the work. Directed by Scott Teems (who directed Holbrook in the award-winning film That Evening Sun), this documentary celebrates the sixtieth consecutive year of Holbrook’s one-man masterpiece, and features interviews with Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Emile Hirsch, Cherry Jones, and a host of others. This is the epic story of “Mark Twain Tonight!” This is the story of an American odyssey.
