Al Jazeera Bans Terrorist, Islamist, Jihad & Other Terms

Al Jazeera English executive Van Meek instructed his staff on Tuesday to avoid using the term “terrorism/terrorists,” according to an internal email, following deadly Islamist terror attacks against civilians in France, Libya and Nigeria in recent weeks. Van Meek also banned the use of the words “militant,” “Islamist,” “jihad,” “radicals,” and “insurgents,” giving specific exceptions for when they could be used. The reported email comes after the head of the BBC’s Arabic service, Tarik Kafala, told a British newspaper that the men who attacked the Charlie Hebdo newspaper staff in Paris should not be described as “terrorists” on the airwaves. We take a look at the new guidelines, in this Lip News clip with Elliot Hill and Mark Sovel.
