Cows are create twice as much methane when they are treated with antibiotics compared to those who are not. This roughly equates to as much methane in a day as a car does. Antibiotics in factory farming is a common practice and is heavily relied on to prevent the spread of sickness among the cows. This methane is 25x more toxic than carbon dioxide and mainly comes from the cow’s mouth rather than feces because of the way they digest food, which requires them to belch. Mark Sovel and Elliot Hill take a closer look at the impact antibiotics are having on our planet on the Lip News.
