A Colorado man was shot and killed by police over the weekend after the officer allegedly forced his way into the victim’s house, where the two argued and the shooting occurred.
The victim – identified as 27-year-old Jack Jacquez – was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after the 2:30 a.m. shooting in the city of Rocky Ford. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is working with other authorities to investigate the officer-involved shooting.
The Rocky Ford Police officer has been identified as James Ashby, who has been placed on paid leave pending further developments in the investigation. Witnesses say the officer broke down the door and entered the home after Jacquez went inside.
Sara Lindenmuth, Jacquez’s sister-in-law, said she heard the two men shouting at each other before the shooting.
“He was standing next to his mom, his back turned toward the officer and then he shot him twice in the back and then pepper sprayed him. Then they handcuffed his fiancé, for reasons I don’t know why. And the mom went to call the cops and the cop took her phone and threw it against the wall,” Lindenmuth said. “He just showed up. No one knows why he just showed up. It just all happened unexpectedly,” she said.
Jacquez’s fiance, Mariah, told local station KKTV that Jacquez had been out late because he was helping a friend babysit. “Came out, gunshots firing. Found my fiancé on the floor - he couldn’t breathe,” she said.
