Just when you thought the stories about Miley Cyrus’ scandalous antics and in-your-face twerking were finally a thing of the past, a new controversy has cropped up in Mexico over her on-stage disrespect of the country’s flag.
A tape of the incident during a concert this week in Monterrey on the country’s Independence Day shows a flag being thrown on stage during the 21-year-old pop star’s performance. One of her backup dancers then picks up the flag and rubs it against the large prosthetic butt Cyrus wears while she twerks away during her performance.
While the video is provoking laughter among onlookers and fans, Mexican authorities have found no humor in the stunt and have launched a criminal investigation.
“They are hitting her with the flag, or cleaning her backside. It’s a lack of respect,” said Nuevo Leon lawmaker Trevino Cabello of the country’s conservative National Action Party. “The Interior Ministry must sanction the singer Miley Cyrus for desecrating the flag.”
According to Mexican law, disrespecting the flag can be punishable with modest fines or up to 36 hours in jail. However, if the infraction is committed for commercial purposes, the punishment could also include a fine up to $5,200.
