Driverless Cars Get Major Boost from Washington

The Obama Administration is proposing to spend almost $4 billion over the next 10 years to accelerate the acceptance of driverless cars on U.S. roads in order to combat traffic fatalities and travel delays. U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx unveiled a plan to develop a national blueprint for autonomous driving technology within the next six months at the Detroit Auto Show this week. The proposal aims to have automakers and federal regulators work together to craft policies for driverless vehicles as well as pilot programs for testing “connected vehicles” that talk to one another to avoid crashes.
