Synopsis

Dubai is already home to the world’s biggest shopping mall and also has one of the largest aquariums and underground zoos on earth. Now, the capital of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates has announced plans to build the world’s largest airport.

The new airport will come out of a $32 billion expansion of the city’s second airport, known as Al Maktoum International at Dubai World Central.

The country’s main airport, Dubai International, is already the world’s 7th largest, but that was apparently not good enough for the country’s rulers, who want to be No. 1 with the new facility, expected to eventually handle more than 200 million passengers per year.

“The 54 square mile airport metropolis will feature everything from commercial, residential, and leisure developments,” said Benjamin Zhang, of the publication Business Insider.

The first phase of the new airport is expected to be completed within 6-8 years.
