A substitute teacher in Battle Creek, Michigan was fired after explaining to her class of 8th graders that Georgia O’Keefes flower paintings have often been interpreted as looking like vaginas. According to Harper Creek Middle School, Allison Wint violated the school’s policy by not seeking “advanced approval when discussing any form of reproductive health.” Wint claims she wasn’t speaking on reproductive health nor was aware of the school’s policy. This is not the first time a woman was punished for using the word vagina in Michigan. In fact, Democratic Representative Lisa Brown was accused of “violating the decorum of the House” when she spoke out against a bill that added regulations on abortion providers after 20 weeks. Joya Mia Italiano and Margaret J. Howell discuss the suppression of the use of the word “vagina” further on the Lip News.
