Here’s Why Your Eyes Turn Red in a Pool and it’s Gross

Red eyes at the pool are caused by urine, not the chemical chlorine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) annual healthy swimming report. The report says that the actual cause of irritated eyes is nitrogen in pee, poop, sweat and a lot of other things we bring in the water with us binding to chlorine to form chloramine.
