Indonesia has been urged to end required virginity tests on female military recruits by human rights activists who say that the hymen examinations are “harmful and humiliating” including the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) who described the testing as “a gross violation of women’s rights and one that may amount to ill-treatment and torture under international law.” The Indonesian army has defended the tests, saying that they prevent women of low morals from entering and damaging the military.
