One of TV’s biggest cult classics of all time – David Lynch’s quirky series Twin Peaks – is coming back after 25 years, just as predicted by the drama’s central figure, Laura Palmer, in the 1991 finale episode.
The series is set to go into production next year and premiere in 2016 on Showtime for a nine-episode run. Lynch will direct the reboot of the drama, which will be set in the present day, and his co-creator Mark Frost will return as a writer.
Lynch confirmed the news to fans on social media. “Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style,” he tweeted.
Kyle MacLachlan will return in his role as FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper and also gave his reaction via Twitter. “Better fire up that percolator and find my black suit!” The story focuses on Cooper, who goes to the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Peaks to investigate the murder of local high school homecoming queen Laura Palmer.
Showtime Networks President David Nevins even invoked MacLachlan’s character in announcing the news. “To quote Agent Cooper, ‘I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.’”
Lynch had previously denied that Twin Peaks would ever come back to the small screen, but the series finale episode provided a hint during a scene in which Laura Palmer tells Agent Cooper, “I’ll see you again in 25 years.”
