Gay marriage has been legalized nationwide in a 5-4 ruling by the US Supreme Court on Friday that struck down state bans on marriage equality. Justice Anthony Kennedy delivered the majority opinion and was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor, while Chief Justice John Roberts was joined in dissent by Justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel A.
