English teacher, Tyrel Martin Marhanka, committed suicide inside a Taiwan court after being given a four-year prison sentence for possession of marijuana and opium in 2015. The American father-of-two reportedly smuggled scissors past security guards and said, “I don’t want to live anymore,” before using them to sever arteries on both sides of his neck. Marhanka was asked if he wanted to repeal the sentence, but he refused. Marhanka died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Marhanka had lived in Taiwan for 15 years and claimed that the 200 cannabis plants, 195 dried cannabis plants and 10 opium poppies at his rental house were for personal use. Margaret J. Howell, Jo Ankier and Nik Zecevic discuss the shocking suicide on the Lip News.
