Eritreans men have received a mandatory order to take part in polygamy by marrying two wives or risk life imprisonment with hard labor. A memo, allegedly issued by the Eritrean Department of Religious Affairs, called for polygamy due to an acute shortage of men after the war with Ethiopia. The decree also stated that any married woman who tries to prevent her husband from marrying another woman will face life imprisonment. The Eritrean-Ethiopian War saw the death of 150,000 soldiers.
