Conservative media tycoon Rupert Murdoch will lay off around 180 employees at National Geographic, the largest in the organization’s 127-year history. The layoffs which have been referred to as “Choptober” and “Knivember” will affect almost every department, including the magazine. Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox purchased a 73% share of the National Geographic Society earlier this year and though the layoffs were not discussed when Fox acquired majority shares they have stated that the layoffs were a means to cut costs.
