New York Leads Global Climate Change Protests that Drew 600,000

Protesters gathered at more than 2,000 locations around the world on Sunday in an attempt to draw attention to the issue of climate change and to urge a coordinated strategy to curb it.

The largest demonstration by far was held in Manhattan – dubbed the People’s Climate March - where an estimated 300,000 took the streets carrying signs and flaunting oversized figures to attract attention to the cause.

Among the marchers were United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and top political leaders, as well as Wolf of Wall Street star Leonardo DiCaprio and legendary rocker Sting.

In total, nearly 600,000 demonstrators attended 28,000 events in 161 countries.

The protests were timed to coincide with Tuesday’s U.N. Summit on Climate Change, which will be attended in New York by major world leaders.

The summit is expected to urge world leaders of poorer nations to cut their carbon emissions to improve world environmental conditions, and will seek to persuade major industrialized countries to increase financial contributions to the effort.
