President Obama announced on Wednesday that he was nominating federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court. Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said they may be open to accepting Garland, who is considered a moderate, if Hillary Clinton is elected president in November over fears that she would appoint a more liberal candidate. This contradicts Republicans’ previous argument that the next president gets to pick the nominee and that they would reject Obama’s pick no matter what. Can Republicans have it both ways?
