Cambodia built a $40,000 toilet for the three-day visit of Thai princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The toilet, built by Thai construction company SCG Cement-Building Materials, was meant to be used by the princess for one night before being destroyed. How can poverty-stricken Cambodia, where fewer than 40% of people in rural areas have access to toilets, justify a custom-built luxury toilet with such a hefty price tag?
