The CDC has announced that an estimated 20 million new STD infections occurred in 2014, the majority affecting 15-24-year-olds. Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis increased the most primarily in gay and bisexual men. Dating apps such as Tinder and Grindr are suspected to have played a role in the promotion of “hook-up” culture and the sharp rise in STDs. Other factors contributing to the rise and spread of these STDs are funding cuts in public health clinics, as well as a decrease in sexual education programs.
