The US military will accelerate cyber attacks against ISIS, according to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. ISIS has successfully used the internet and social media sites as means for recruitment and coordination. With Cyberattacks becoming the new battleground for modern warfare, Carter seeks to combat ISIS’ reign with cyber weaponry. According to Carter, “The ISIL campaign in — particularly in Syria to interrupt, disrupt ISIL’s command and control, to cause them to lose confidence in their networks, to overload their network so that they can’t function, and do all of these things that will interrupt their ability to command and control forces there, control the population and the economy.” By combining traditional forms of electronic attacks with cyber attacks, electronic surveillance and the US military, Carter is confident the Pentagon can make an impact against ISIS.
