Iraq’s Mosul Dam is at risk of “catastrophic failure” that could unleash a “tsunami wave” which could kill hundreds of thousands of people within hours. The US government has issued a warning of the “unprecedented” risk, including a knockout of power in major cities in Iraq. The dam fell into severe disrepair after decades of dictatorship, instability and war left the dam struggling to secure foreign companies to maintain it. Should the dam break, those able to escape the waters would then be displaced in regions under ISIS control.
