Will the Supreme Court Strike Down Strict Texas Abortion Law?

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments Wednesday for the most widely contested abortion restrictions in the country. Whole Woman’s Health vs. Hellerstedt is a challenge to Texas’ House Bill 2, an abortion restriction passed in 2013 that imposes strict requirements for abortion providers in the state. HB2 requires abortion providers to abide by the same building codes as a surgical center, and requires physicians to have admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles. Since the bill has gone into effect, 22 of the state’s 41 abortion providers have closed. Does HB2 place an “undue burden” on Texas women seeking to terminate a pregnancy?
