Investigative journalist and author Mark Ebner discusses his reporting on the rape allegations against Bill Cosby, which he first started writing about in 2007, but his story was not touched by any media outlets.
“I had been hearing for years about Bill Cosby, and rumors, that he’d been doing this – allegedly drugging and sexually abusing, if not raping women,” Mark said. “The streets don’t lie, if you have your ear to the ground in Hollywood, there’s something to it usually.”
He explains that he was put in contact with one of Cosby’s accusers through a colleague of his and she ended up telling him her story, and he found her and another alleged victim completely credible. “It felt like to me that they were just trying to unburden themselves.”
After interviewing three sources who detailed similar stories about allegedly being assaulted by Cosby, he decided he had enough to write a story on the multiple allegations against the beloved comedian and TV star. But he says when he first published the story on his website, no media picked it up.
“I went to 33 outlets, and had experience with almost all of them, and nothing. They just did not want to touch Mr. Cosby – and I was just rather stunned.”
Mark even pitched the story as a book idea, but again the answer was always no. “Mark, don’t you know that Cosby’s been a client of ours for 50 years,” he says the agent from William Morris Endeavor told him.
“We’re talking about Bill Cosby, we’re talking about an icon, and we’re talking about – take it out of the realm of entertainment – if these allegations are true, we’re looking at one of the most prolific serial rapists of all time.
“The media has been protecting him from this kind of bad publicity for decades, it’s nothing new.”
He also addresses the interviewer for Associated Press who asked Cosby if he wanted to comment on the latest allegations against him, during which the comedian flatly says no, and questions the interviewer for even bringing up the subject.
Mark said the young AP reporter was basically over his head in the situation and he said the news agency should have sent someone else to the interview. “All he did was bully that poor kid and called his publicist into the situation.”
“By the same token, what that particular reporter brought out in Cosby was – and anybody can see it on the Internet – a very, very dark side – very dark side, very bullish,” he added.
“There’s obviously something dirty going on, if he cannot under any circumstances, even address these allegations.”
