The discovery of a site in Nazareth said to be the Jesus home has caused a sensation in the scientific, archaeological, and religious communities. British archaeologist, Dr. Ken Dark, shares his experience as lead excavator on the project, the significant history of the site, and clarifies if the 1st century dwelling could actually be the house Jesus was raised in. Nazareth and the cultural & religious artifacts in the area, plus how they could be interpreted to determine the inhabitants of the home are all explored in this Lip News interview, hosted by Jackie Koppell.
Ken Dark is a British archaeologist who works on Roman and post-Roman Europe and the Middle East, on the archaeology of religion (especially early Christianity), archaeological theory and methods, and on the relationship between the study of the past and contemporary global issues. He received a BA in archaeology from the University of York and after taking his PhD in archaeology and history at the University of Cambridge taught at the universities of Cambridge, Oxford and Reading. Since 2001 he has been Director of the Research Centre for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies at the University of Reading, in England. Ken has written numerous academic books and papers and has directed and co-directed many archaeological projects in Britain and the Middle East. In addition to his work in and around Nazareth, these include a new archaeological study of the famous Byzantine church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, and an ongoing examination of the Roman and Byzantine landscape around the Sea of Galilee. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and of the Royal Historical Society, leading ‘learned societies’ for scholars in archaeology and history respectively, and holds honorary professorships from several European and American universities.
