TANGERINE is a movie shot entirely on iPhones, telling the story of “working” girl Sin-Dee who travels around Hollywood on Christmas Eve searching for the pimp who broke her heart. TANGERINE and STARLET creator Sean Baker is joined by actor PJ Ransone to discuss creating the film, the sex worker industry, and mixing trained and untrained actors on set. Baker and Ransone also examine creating art and films with low budgets in this uncensored and unconventional conversation on TALK SHOW with Harper Simon.
It’s Christmas Eve in Tinseltown and Sin-Dee is back on the block. Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend hasn’t been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra, embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumor. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles, including an Armenian family dealing with their own repercussions of infidelity.
Sean Baker is a New York native and the award-winning director of Take Out (2008) and Prince of Broadway (2009)—both nominated for the John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award—and Starlet (2012), the recipient of the Robert Altman Award and another Cassavetes nominee. Baker is a graduate of New York University and co-created IFC/FOX’s comedy series Greg the Bunny and its spin-off, MTV’s Warren the Ape.
James Ransone attended Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland from 1993-1997. The school is a “magnet school” that allows students to specialize in subjects such as theater, dance, writing, fine arts, and film as well as all the required academic classes. Ransone specialized in theater, then changed majors to fine arts and graduated in 1997. he currently lives in NYC.
