Alison Pill on Making Biopic MILK and the Benefits of Cocaine

The Newsroom star Alison Pill discusses filming the biopic Milk in San Francisco’s Castro District and going out with cast members during shooting.

“We went around the hotel when we were shooting Milk and we traded clothes – like we would be in the hallway and trade clothes for no reason,” Alison said about one of the more unique aspects of cast bonding.

About working with cast members of the film, she said most of them were fun to hang out with on the set. “I mean we went out with Sean Penn a couple of times – who can put us all to shame, in just staying up late,” Alison. “We were all like, ‘We’re so tired! We’re all 21 and 22. It’s deeply impressive.”

The conversation them turned to the benefits of drugs in terms of extending the party experience. “There’s a lot of things that are great about cocaine, let’s be real here. Including, forget about coffee. And it makes you – if you’re self-important already – you don’t even need to be interrupted.”

Speaking about her role as Maggie Jordan on The Newsroomwhich recently aired its series finale episode – she said the conclusion of the drama with her cast mates was bittersweet.

“Did I cry when I wrapped, no it was sort of this funny weird thing – it was so unbelievable that we would be done, that I don’t think it really struck anybody. It still hasn’t fully set in that I won’t be going back this spring to see everybody and to go back to the bullpen.”
