Hollywood investigative journalist Mark Ebner discusses an alleged bait-and-switch technique by the Church of Scientology that involved a fake promo poster promising the attendance of big name female comedians at a church-sponsored event that the famous comics did not attend.
“What they were doing was putting a comedy show on at the (Church of Scientology) Celebrity Centre,” Ebner said, adding that the organizers had a lineup of lesser known comics who were set to take part in the October 4 event, which was advertised as the “Los Angeles Women in Comedy Festival.”
“But what they did was they used all these well-to-do comics - Kathy Griffin, Sarah Silverman, Elayne Boosler, Caroline Rhea - and they used that on the flyer that they sent out.
“This is not something you should be doing, especially if you’re Scientology, because there’s actually a statue that any one of these comics, if they really cared that much, they could sue the shit out of Scientology for right of publicity - they took that from them. And they used that to promote a $10 a ticket little comedy show at the Celebrity Centre.”
