The director of crime drama After the Fall, Saar Klein, is also an Oscar-nominated editor and talks about working with filmmaker Terrence Malick and other great directors.
“I’ve always dreamed about directing,” Saar said about his directorial debut, adding that as soon as he was exposed to filmmaking, he loved it and wanted to be involved with it in any way he could.
“I learned how to edit early on, in college I knew how to edit, and after I came to L.A. I could edit a little bit, and so that’s kind of where the door opened. And then the opportunities came through editing – incredible opportunities to work.”
He said that while editing The New World with Malick, the director “He said to me, “You’ve got to direct, get out of the editing room.’ And what it took was just saying no to editing jobs, I would just say no, I’m a director.”
