THE ORIGINALS Star Sebastian Roché Talks Mikael’s Vengeful Return

Highlight Synopsis

With the new season of the Vampire Diaries spinoff The Originals set to premiere October 6, Sebastian Roché talks about his character’s return “with a vengeance,” plus he previews the Shakespearean tone of the new episodes.

In The Originals, the original family from The Vampire Diaries returns and settles in the city they helped build, New Orleans.

“I came back last season in sort of a tempestuous way,” says Roché. “They basically want to give a beautiful tone to this season. It’s going to be more of a gothic fairy tale with Shakespearean undertones – very ambitious.”

He said his character is filled with rage and poised for dramatic conflicts with other characters. “Mikael comes back with a vengeance. There are going to be some epic confrontations between me and my son – my illegitimate son Klaus – of course, because those confrontations are usually the most interesting.”

He said there are some incredible scenes and storylines written for him in Season 2 and describes one particular epic scene recently filmed.

“There are going to be some amazing interactions between me and some other cast members. Noticeably a scene that we shot a few weeks ago that was terrifying and tragic at the same time. It was just one of these scenes that, you know, when you’re in the zone, it’s just one of these extraordinary scenes. You know why you do this job as an actor – you pinch yourself – at how lucky you are to be on a set.”

When asked about possible interaction with his on-screen wife who’s come back to the series, Roché said it remains to be seen how his character will handle her. “I don’t know yet. I don’t even know that she’s there. She comes back through the body of someone else.”

He also spoke about fellow character Davina, who has ability to keep Mikael from killing people. “I may find a way to extricate myself from that situation,” he reveals. He said the relationship building between the two is also interesting because it is essentially a mentor, student relationship and there’s something that Mikael admires about this young, small girl who tries to defy the man that he is.

During his entire wide-ranging interview, Roché also talks about appearing alongside Liam Neeson in the film A Walk Among the Tombstones, gives his views on the backlash to Emma Watson’s speech on gender equality, the prevalence of nude celebrity photo leaks, and discusses a recent controversy surrounding producer Shonda Rhimes.
