Let's talk about it.

Should Right-to-Die Laws Be Extended to All US States?

Criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi and former prosecutor Loni Coombs team up to examine the issue of assisted suicide in the wake of last weekend’s death of 29-year-old Brittany Maynard, a terminally ill woman who took advantage of Oregon’s right-to-die law to end her life on her own terms.

“I’m a big supporter of Brittany Maynard’s decision to be able to decide when and how she lives and dies. It should be our choice if we can have it on how to end our life,” Cavallucci said.

“I don’t know who in their right mind thinks that they should be able to tell me or anyone else that you need to suffer in pain and agony, and spend all your money and bankrupt yourself and put your family through that, so that you should die the way we think you should die.”

Coombs points out that in Oregon – where the right-to-life law has been in place for 17 years – 800 people have already taken advantage of the measure to end their lives.

“I think it should be in every state,” she adds. “I don’t think people should have to go and move and uproot - like here, she only has a few months to live and has to move and do all the stressors of that. I think the people should have that right to choose.”
