The Slamdance Film Festival has grown into a major indie event since being created in 1995 as an alternative to Robert Redford’s much bigger Sundance Film Festival. As both festivals prepare to kick off this week in Park City, The Insiders host Sebastian Twardosz examines some of this year’s top contenders in this Slamdance preview.
One of the most buzzed-about films this year is Batkid Begins, a documentary profiling the boy in San Francisco whose Make-A-Wish request to be Batman basically shut down the city and spawned an international phenomenon.
The horror comedy Bloodsucking Bastards – directed by Brian James O’Connell – was previewed by the filmmaker on The Insiders and is opening Slamdance this year and hosting the opening party on Friday night.
For Marvel fans or rock music lovers, I Am Thor is being offered up by filmmaker Ryan Wise, and chronicles bodybuilding rocker John Mikl Thor’s career comeback.
Screenwriter and director Lawrence Krauser is showcasing his comedy Wendell and the Lemon, which tells the “story of a young man finds a lemon on the sidewalk, takes it home, and becomes inordinately fond of it. Complications ensue.”
Female Pervert – by filmmaker Jiyoung Lee – will enjoy its world premiere at Slamdance. It portrays “a lonely video game designer seeking a true connection in the modern world, but her perversions are hard to suppress.” Will she be able to change? Or will she accept her fate as a female pervert?
