Argentine Prosecutor Found Dead Days After Making Explosive Allegations Against Top Officials

The mysterious death of an Argentine prosecutor over the weekend is raising new questions about his investigation into an alleged cover-up by government about Iran’s possible involvement in at attack on a Jewish center in 1994 that killed 85 people.

The body of prosecutor Alberto Nisman was discovered Sunday inside his Buenos Aires apartment with a gunshot wound to the head – the day before he was scheduled to testify before lawmakers at a closed-door hearing.

“Alberto Nisman was found dead on Sunday night in his flat on the 13th floor of the tower Le Parc, in the Buenos Aires district of Puerto Madero,” said a spokesperson for Argentina’s security ministry. “Next to Nisman’s body, a .22-calibre handgun was found, together with a bullet casing.”

Police said the door of the residence was locked from the inside and no suicide was found. Preliminary autopsy results suggested “there was no third-person intervention” in the death, according to the office of the state prosecutor.

Just last week, Nisman revealed bombshell accusations against top government officials in Argentina – including President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner – that focused on the country’s alleged collusion with Iran to cover up Tehran’s alleged involvement in the Jewish center attack.

The prosecutor said his investigation had shown that Argentina engaged in secret talks with Iran to cover up responsibility for the bombing in exchange for the country receiving Iranian oil.

The Argentine newspaper Clarin reported that Nisman told the publication just a few days earlier about the recent revelations, “I could end up dead because of this.”
