A gene patent held by Myriad Genetics was struck down by Australia’s highest court in a unanimous decision. The ruling comes after Yvonne D’Arcy, a 69-year-old breast cancer patient, filed a lawsuit against the company, which holds the patent for the BRCA1 gene-a gene that increases the odds of breast cancer in women. Australia is the second country to strike down gene patents; the US Supreme court struck down Myriad Genetics’ patents on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 in 2013.
