While many people around the world might be terrified by future implications resulting from the rapid rise of ISIS, members of a Dutch biker gang are taking matters into their own hands by joining the fight against the Islamic militant group.
The bikers from the country’s notorious No Surrender motorcycle club – some of them former Dutch military veterans - have traveled to Iraq to take up arms to fight alongside the Kurds in the battle against ISIS.
While some initially questioned whether the action would be sanctioned by the Dutch government, officials have since made clear that there is no national prohibition on its citizens.
“Joining a foreign armed force was previously punishable. Now it’s no longer forbidden,” said Wim de Bruin, a spokesman for the country’s Public Prosecutor. “You just can’t join a fight against the Netherlands.”
Various European nations, including the Netherlands, have recently cracked down on citizens teaming up to fight together with ISIS, which has already captured wide areas of territory across Iraq and Syria.
