‘Harry Potter’ star Emma Watson is coming under fire from anti-feminists after delivering an impassioned speech at the United Nations during which she advocated gender equality and invited men to join an organized movement supporting the cause.
Her speech pointed out that the fight for gender equally affects men too and cited a statistic indicating that suicide in the United Kingdom is the biggest killer of men between the ages of 20 and 49.
“I want men to take up this mantle so that their daughters, sisters and mothers can be free from this prejudice, but also so that their sons have permission to be vulnerable and human too,” Watson said in the speech.
She urged men all over the world to join her movement under the hashtag #HeforShe, which many celebrities were quick to support via social media.
She expounded on the topic during her speech. “Men don’t have the benefits of equality either. We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes, but I can see that they are. And that when they are free things will change for women as a natural consequence.”
Despite her obvious attempt at being inclusive during her speech on feminism and acknowledging the male gender, she still received a huge backlash for the remarks.
The criticism got so bad that there were even threats to release nude photos of the actress in retaliation, but these turned out to be a hoax.
