Gun Rights Restricted for Domestic Abusers in SCOTUS Ruling

The Supreme Court ruled that certain individuals with misdemeanor domestic assault charges may not be able to have guns. This was after a 6 to 2 decision in the case of Voisine v. United States. Mr. Voisine and William Armstrong of Maine plead guilty to misdemeanor assault charges in state court. Years later, both men were found with weapons which is a federal offense. They argued that weapons bans shouldn’t be for them because they were charged with ‘reckless conduct’ rather than intentional abuse. However, the in her majority opinion Justice Elena Kagan wrote, “A person who assaults another recklessly uses force no less than one who carries out that same action knowingly or intentionally.” We look at this gun control victory on the Lip News with Joya Mia Italiano, Elliot Hill and Nik Zecevic.
