Women documentary makers Jackie Weissman (Rock N Roll Mamas), Irene Taylor Brodsky (The Winding Stream), and Beth Harrington (Hear and Now) join BYOD for a director’s roundtable from the Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival. We discuss their films and insights on the only talk show solely about documentary film.

Originally from New York, Jackie Weissman lives in Portland, Oregon where she works as a documentary filmmaker/Avid editor. Jackie received her MFA in film and video production from Columbia College-Chicago. Her award winning documentary, The Gorilla and the Piker, was featured on WNET, Channel 13 in New York, as a part of its Reel New York series. In 2004, Jackie was awarded a residency at Yaddo to develop ideas for Rock and Roll Mamas.

Irene Taylor Brodsky is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning, Oscar-nominated, director, producer, writer and cinematographer whose documentaries have shown theatrically, at film festivals and on television worldwide.

Besides her 2004 Emmy win for her CBS News portrait of the architect Samuel Mockbee, Irene’s team won the 2012 Emmy for Music and Sound for her HBO film, Saving Pelican 895. Her documentary short, The Final Inch, was nominated for a 2009 Academy Award®, three Emmy Awards, and won the International Documentary Association’s Pare Lorentz Award for outstanding cinematography. Her first feature-length film, Hear and Now, premiered at Sundance in 2007 where it won the Audience Award, and went on to receive a 2008 Peabody Award and numerous Audience and Jury awards around the world. Hear and Now was also nominated for Documentary of the Year by the Producer’s Guild of America.

Beth Harrington is an award-winning independent producer, director and writer, born in Boston and transplanted to the Pacific Northwest. She has been making media professionally since 1977. She most often focuses on work that explores American history, music and culture.

Harrington’s independent production Welcome to the Club – The Women of Rockabilly, a music documentary about the pioneering women of rock and roll, was honored with a 2003 Grammy nomination and has been seen on public television and at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. This and other work reflect a long-standing love of music. In a previous lifetime, she was a rock & roll singer, most noted for her years as a member of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers on the Warner Brothers Sire Records label.

She is currently in post-production on The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and The Course of Country Music, a music history and performance film. The film features members of the Carter and Cash families and includes an interview with the legendary Johnny Cash.
