Maria Altmann was the young niece of the Bloch-Bauer family, who were renowned benefactors of Gustav Klimt and had one of the great collections of art, porcelain and musical instruments in the Vienna. As the nazis stormed into town and looted the art from the city, the Bloch-Bauer family left town with little more than the clothes on their back.
