Coalition Fight Against ISIS Faces Uphill Battle Over Strategic Goals

As the U.S. builds an international coalition aimed at defeating the threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, some are questioning whether the mix of NATO and Arab states will ultimately come together and remain cohesive enough to be successful.

The key to the coalition operation’s success will center around its ability to turn disaffected Sunnis – especially in Iraq and Syria – against the extremists.

ISIS has strengthened amid anger of the Sunni minority – which has been cut off from power and resources by the U.S., as well as Nouri al-Maliki’s Iran-backed Shia government - which also alienated Kurds in northern Iraq.

The discussion focuses on whether the challenges facing the coalition can be overcome to ultimately defeat ISIS, which is seen as getting financially stronger every day.

It is also pointed out that destroying ISIS outright will not be as easy as it seems since the group is not only a physical presence, but also a wide-reaching philosophy and approach to life.
